What Is Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is the most movable joint in the human body. A group of four muscles and their tendons, called the rotator cuff, give the shoulder its wide range of motion. Swelling, damage, or bone changes around the rotator cuff can cause shoulder pain. You may have pain when lifting your arm above your head or moving it forward behind your back.

What Are The Symptoms To Look Out For?

Pain from the shoulder complex can cause significant discomfort in the shoulder itself. This pain may be felt at the front, back, or side of the shoulder, or it may encompass the entire shoulder, depending on the underlying cause. However, shoulder pain can also radiate into the arm, generally not extending below the elbow. Additionally, the shoulder can cause pain in the shoulder blade region or lead to pain radiating up into the neck. This pain may develop with or without an injury, and shoulder pain can be particularly bothersome.

Often, it makes sleeping difficult, leading to a feeling of exhaustion throughout the day. It can hinder activities like reaching up to grab something from the kitchen cabinet or washing your hair. Many people struggle with reaching back to put their arm in a coat sleeve or raising their arm to put on a T-shirt; sometimes, even applying deodorant can become a challenging task.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing Shoulder Pain?

You may have tried medications or rest without success, or perhaps you have had a cortisone shot that either didn’t help or provided temporary relief before the pain returned. It’s possible that you’ve even attempted physical therapy but had a poor experience, or it simply didn’t alleviate your pain – but not all physical therapy clinics are the same. At Campbell Physical Therapy & Wellness, we are different. Our goal is to stay updated on the latest developments in care to give you the best chance of recovery. We focus on treatments that actually stimulate the healing and strengthening of tissue, such as StemWave, blood flow restriction training, and dry needling with electrical stimulation.

A crucial part of recovery is exercise, but not just any exercise; it should be tailored specifically to your unique condition and problems. We begin with a thorough history and examination to determine the cause of the problem. It is important to rule out the neck as a potential source of pain, as issues in the neck can cause pain in the shoulder, shoulder blade, or arm. After that, we can develop a plan for your recovery, likely incorporating treatments that you won’t find at other clinics – treatments that are truly game changers. There are three stages we will guide you through: the first phase focuses on relieving pain, the second phase on healing, and the third phase on correcting the underlying problem to prevent recurrence.

At each visit, we fine-tune your plan of care to ensure a speedy recovery. If you’re suffering or even if you’ve just started to feel some twinges of pain, reach out to us, as it’s easier to address a problem sooner rather than later. Don’t let that small pain turn into a bigger issue. The best option is to come in for a complimentary discovery visit, where you can speak with one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy. We will take the time to discuss your problems, goals, and any concerns you might have. At the end of this discussion, we’ll provide you with treatment options and recommendations to get you on the road to recovery.
